A man who is believed to have been a suspect in a Gulfport murder reportedly turned a gun on himself when Jones County Sheriff’s Department personnel entered the residence in the 2700 block of North 5th Avenue in Laurel to take him into custody just after noon on Friday. The JCSD responded to the residence at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service after that agency received a tip on the suspect’s location, sources with knowledge of the incident said. Personnel from the Laurel Police Department also responded when things got chaotic with bystanders and people who knew the man. An unidentified woman who said she lived there was sitting in the house when “they stormed in and told me to get out, so I took off running,” she said. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called to handle the case, which is protocol when there’s a shooting that involves another law enforcement agency. Sources said that shooting was self-inflicted, but that will be part of MBI’s investigation. The JCSD referred media inquiries to MBI, which doesn’t comment on ongoing investigations. More details will be reported when they become available. (Photo by Mark Thornton)
